Ah… the infamous Kuu… when we thought that no one else knew about this place. Now we can barely get a seat in there!

These pictures are from when we went once upon a time. We’ve been so often I can’t count how many dishes we’ve tried!

They make a really nice soy matcha and a matcha banana smoothie. I’ve found some places that make soy matchas, the matcha isn’t dissolved properly and it’s a bit grainy. Here though, it’s pretty good!

What to say about their food but… I really miss Japan! Below is a picture of the Japanese Brekky platter for the hungry. You get two salads, a poached egg, small piece of salmon, 2 onigiri, miso soup and a small bit of potato salad as well (I think this dish has changed slightly since this photo was taken).

I really like the flavours of this dish. The salads are nice and fresh, the onigiri are good but I think there is a bit too much rice, I could do without the poached egg (only because I’m not a massive fan of poached eggs), the salmon is perfectly cooked (I could do with a bigger piece though :p) and the miso soup compliments the dish very well. It seems like a lot of food but surprisingly, even though I was full after, I didn’t feel all gross and sluggish! Win!

My hubby always loves to try the katsu currys when we go to Japanese places. This one is up there! I mean nothing is comparable to the one we had in Japan but it’s still pretty good! Flavours were really nice and the katsu was cooked perfectly.

As I said, this is one of our regulars. We love Japanese food and Japanese breakfasts are one of our favourites!

Definitely try this place if you haven’t already! It’s quite small so I would try to get there early to snag a seat inside!

Smith Street Alimentari

Wow! Finally back after a few months…

Smith Street Alimentary… what can I say about this place but amazing! A friend from work had recommended this place and we couldn’t wait to try it! So glad we did too!

I ordered my usual soy mocha and buffalo soldiers and my hubby ordered the green smoothie and bircher.

I can only really comment on what I had since I only had a small spoonful of the bircher. I’m so glad I ordered what I ordered. Everything about the dish was spectacular! The polenta soldiers went so well with the amazing mozzarella and pesto. There was nothing I could fault about the dish.

If I’m ever to go back, I would definitely order this dish again! Superb!

Pizza Pizza Pizza

Ever wanted to go to a hidden bar in Melbourne but just don’t know where to go or how to get in? Let me tell you, you’ll want to come to this place… Pizza pizza pizza!

Well the shop out front is called this, the back of the pizza joint hidden behind a black curtain, you’ll find a cozy bar filled topped up with cocktails, a DJ and little booths!

My friend had gone to the opening of this place the other week and she was dying to show me so we went yesterday! The pizza shop is on Meyers lane in the CBD. It’s not hard to miss. You walk in and mention to the guy you’re here for the bar, or you’d like the secret menu and he should let you in.

We came after work on a Friday and since this place isn’t well known yet, we were the first ones there, but to be honest, it didn’t matter. We sat ourselves in a booth and ordered some cocktails. I tried a daquari and also the fruitini. Both were really nice! Alcohol not too overpowering and nice and fruity at the same time.

This place also sells pizzas.. and when I say pizzas, I mean big New York sized pizzas! There are only a few flavours you can choose from but you can also go halvies! We ordered half pepperoni and half mushroom… this is between 3 people!

Out comes the piping hot pizza and it was amazing! Not exactly like New York pizzas, the base is a little thicker but hey, its good enough!

Definitely go check this place out! Would love to come back again.

Here’s a picture of the pizza, sorry lighting in the bar wasn’t great but you get the idea 🙂

Just giving my Japan posts a little break for now….

After so long, we finally made it to Entrecôte for dinner! We had always wanted to try it but never really got around to it because of the long lines we always see out front.

One nice warm night, we figured we would give it a go. We were seated outside which was quite warm but once the shade was adjusted, it was actually quite nice.

We ordered the typical Steak Frites as we wanted to see what the fuss was about. I ordered mine medium and my partner ordered his medium rare.

This picture was my steak. Although it looks medium on the photo, I think it was a little over done. My partners one looked medium as well. The steak itself is actually quite a tender cut. Although not cooked to my liking, it was still quite tasty and the herb sauce was delicious! And who can say anything bad about the fries! At Entrecôte there is actually unlimited fries so if you want more, you can order more! On this note however, I think the amount of food you get on the plate is more than enough and you also get a side salad with it as well.

We figured, as we had made the effort to come here, we thought we would order dessert. Everyone has a second stomach for dessert! We ordered the Fanancier aux Amandes.

In short, it’s pretty much an almond cake with Raspberry coulis, raspberry sorbet and marscarpone. The cake was lovely and light. The marscarpone was perfect to cut through the tartness of the raspberries and the sorbet was light and delicious.

Overall, I was expecting more from Entrecôte. For a steak place, you would think they would cook the steak as you had asked. Apart from that, I would still try it again to give it another go.

ABC Chicken

Korean Fried Chicken, whats not to love!

My friends and I came here the other night as one of them had suggested the carbonara flavoured chicken was a must try! We ordered a few dishes. The seafood pancake, the carbonara chicken and a sweet soy chicken.

The seafood pancake was a bit of a disappointment. It tasted very floury and I barely found any seafood in there.

Then out came the chicken! Let me say, the portions were quite big and as there was only 3 of us, we couldn’t finish it all!

The carbonara chicken was different. The chicken was a little bit spicy and tasted like hot and spicy from kfc! The sauce tasted like a carbonara sauce but I expected it to be a bit thicker. It was quite runny and didn’t stick to the chicken as well as I would have thought.

The sweet soy chicken was nice but I found the sauce to be quite sweet for my liking.

Overall, the chicken was nice but I think they needed more vegetables on the menu to counteract how much fried food you’re eating. I walked away feeling very full and extremely unhealthy but I mean, it tasted nice so I guess I shouldn’t complain too much.

Menya Sandaime

When I saw this restaurant on broadsheet, I told myself I need to try this place, 24/7 Ramen! We woke up a little hungover one cold Sunday morning and I thought, what better way to cure our starvation and hangover!

I thought there might be a wait since this place was newly open but lucky enough for us, no line! Got a seat straight away! The restaurant is small and doesn’t fit a lot of people so if you can come at an odd hour where there aren’t many people would be perfect!

I wasn’t sure what ramen to choose as there were a few different types but I ended up settling for the basic Menya Sandaime and my boyfriend ordered the Tsukemen Ramen. We also ordered a side of gyoza.

The gyoza came out looking like typical gyoza but surprisingly tasted different to other gyoza’s I have tasted. It actually tasted better which was good!

Next my ramen! From what I saw from other people’s dishes, the bowls looked huge! But when mine came out I realised it wasn’t as big as I thought but that was fine with me. I loved the flavour of the broth and I really liked the way the pork belly was cooked. Different to other places where they have the chasyu. This pork belly had a nice grilled flavour to it which made the dish different to other ramens I have tried.

My boyfriends Tsukemen Ramen was huge! Although he did end up ordering extra noodles. I still am confused with the concept of noodles in one bowl and broth in another but it seemed to work. The broth had a nice seafood-y flavour to it which wasn’t too overpowering.

I actually really like this place. I don’t know how long I would wait if I had to but I would definitely come back again to try one of the other ramens!

I’ve been wanting to try this restaurant for a while and as my vegetarian friend’s birthday was coming up, I figured this was the perfect opportunity!

The interior of this place is amazing! I love the high ceilings and how the place is sectioned off. It’s not too loud either which was really good. We had a good look at the menu and had no idea what to choose haha

My friend wanted to try an elixir so we thought we’d give it a go. We ordered a different one each so we could have a little taste of each one. I’d have to say, one of them tasted better than the other. I can’t remember which was better but one was too spicy and strong where as the other one was quite a nice starter.

Then came the food! We ordered the tofu skewers, the oyster mushrooms, gnocchi and also an eggplant dish (didn’t take a photo of this one).

I’m not a massive fan of tofu usually but the skewers had the right amount of flavour to them to make them taste not so ‘tofu-ey’ which is what I liked!

The oyster mushrooms were amazing! Nicely cooked and what ever sauce it came with went so well with the mushrooms! Loved it!

The gnocchi was probably my favourite dish of the night! There were a few pieces of gnocchi which came with a blueberry sauce and a pumpkin mousse. Everything on this dish worked! And as weird as it sounds, I thought it tasted a little like scones even though it was supposed to be a savoury dish. I didn’t really care though as it was that good!

The last dish we got was the eggplant. The Za’atar on it was a bit much personally but I think having the goats cheese as well made it a lot better.

Even though I’m not a vegetarian myself, this place is actually really nice. The service is really good and considering we had a few dishes to share it wasn’t that expensive either. I would definitely come back again, with or without a vegetarian counterpart!
