You must know how much I love Japanese by now? 😛 I’m on a mission to find every Japanese breakfast place in Melbourne!

We stumbled upon this place a while ago. It’s situated in Collingwood down the end where all the factory outlets are. The place is in what looks like an old warehouse. The cafe is out the front and they have a shop out the back which sells Japanese products.

I ordered a hojicha tea, since it was a cold day. It really hit the spot! It came in a cute little teapot, I could do with one of these at home!

Then came the breakfast plate. I love how everything looks so nice and healthy! The dish came with some rice, mashed potato, salmon, egg, a salad and miso soup. I loved everything about the dish. Everything was cooked to perfection! I think the menu has changed a bit since I last went as I think the breakfast place has a few different things on it.

I haven’t been back since this time but I would definitely go again. I love love love Japanese breakfasts!

Ada Grace

How did I only recently find out about this place???

I’ve been in South Melbourne for the past 4 years and had never even heard of this place!

Ada Grace is a cute little cafe tucked away in one of the side streets in South Melbourne. The place is nice and cosy with an indoor garden on the roof!

I ordered my normal soy mocha. I find this a bit on the bitter side here but still nice none the less. My hubby ordered the green mango smoothie which I loved! You could have this just as a meal. The mango is subtle and the avocado makes the smoothie lovely and creamy.

I ordered the croquettes and hubby ordered the duck salad.

I found the croquettes nice and crunchy. I think they could have had more flavour in it but I liked how it was a nice and light meal.

I tried a bit of the duck salad. This was also nice and light, great for a healthy lunch. The orange segments give the dish some great freshness. I do however think this dish is quite overpriced. For $19.50, there isn’t much duck in the salad.

We’ve been back to this place another once or twice since the first time. It’s always nice to have a local which you know you can get good food and service!

Smith Street Alimentari

Wow! Finally back after a few months…

Smith Street Alimentary… what can I say about this place but amazing! A friend from work had recommended this place and we couldn’t wait to try it! So glad we did too!

I ordered my usual soy mocha and buffalo soldiers and my hubby ordered the green smoothie and bircher.

I can only really comment on what I had since I only had a small spoonful of the bircher. I’m so glad I ordered what I ordered. Everything about the dish was spectacular! The polenta soldiers went so well with the amazing mozzarella and pesto. There was nothing I could fault about the dish.

If I’m ever to go back, I would definitely order this dish again! Superb!

Denis The Menace

So my boyfriend and I decided to try this place a few weeks ago after we had seen it in a few papers and online. It looked like a funky new cafe so why not.

We were told that the wait would be about 15 minutes but ended up being seated after about half an hour. I usually don’t care but in this instance, when we walked in, there were clearly a few tables free but groups of people still standing outside so it’s a little bit annoying. I figured I’d brush that off because we were seated and we could then look at the menu and order. What was a little frustrating was, no one came to take our drink order for at least 10 minutes and it was hard to catch the eye of one of the staff whilst walking past. When we finally ordered, my boyfriend got the ‘Watashi wa Denis’ and I got the ‘Something Fishy’ dish as I had seen other people order it and it looked lovely.

Our food came out after about 15 minutes but our drinks were nowhere to be seen. When I asked the waitress she said they had a backlog. I’m not sure about everyone else, but at every other cafe, the drinks come before the food majority of the time and if not, they come out a few minutes later. Our drinks ended up coming out maybe 10 minutes after we received our meals. I personally like to drink my coffee before I eat so this was a little annoying for me. However, none the less, we had our food and were ready to tuck in.

My boyfriends meal looked lovely and simple but when he tried it, he said it was bland and boring. The dish was supposed to have spanner crab in it. He said there were probably 3 small pieces and that was it, so technically all he was eating was an omelette.

My dish looked amazing but when I tried it, it was a let down. I felt like it needed more flavour. The most tasty thing on the dish was the fried kale, which I believe is quite disappointing since it’s almost like saying ‘the lettuce on the dish was the best thing’. The smoked trout was nothing to rave on about and there was barely any on the plate either.

Whilst we were eating we did happen to observe other people in the cafe and from what we could see, service was polite but very slow. People who had been seated for ages ordered after 20 minutes. To me, that’s a ridiculous time to wait.

This place is nice to look at but that’s where it ends. I’m not sure if it’s because they’re trying to find their feet but I don’t know if I would go back anytime soon.

Plenty of Windsor

On a cold rainy Melbourne morning, we went to brunch as we do, and ended up at this quaint little cafe called Plenty of Windsor. Located on the busy Chapel St (but down the quieter end) this little cafe was filled with people getting out of the cold to enjoy a delicious breakfast.

The menu wasn’t very substantial and to be honest, I don’t exactly remember what our dishes were called. All I know is, they were AMAZING!

I ended up ordering a dish that had some sourdough bread, topped with porcini mushrooms (I think that was the type of mushroom) parmesan and I’m pretty sure I ordered a side of chorizo as well. I’ll tell you now, I wasn’t expecting this dish to be awesome.. I mean mushrooms with a bit of cheese on toast and chorizo, can’t be that great right? Well I was proved wrong! It was one of the most delicious things I’ve had for brunch in a long time! Everything went so well together and it was all perfectly cooked! Definitely a recommended dish!

My partner wasn’t too sold on the menu and how it had so little to offer so he ended up ordering the Chicken Kiev. When it came out, he didn’t look too impressed as he was hungry and this dish was literally 3 pieces of small chicken legs with some potatoes underneath. When he tried it though, haha was he surprised. He loved the dish! The chicken was perfectly nice and moist and the potatoes were a nice compliment to the dish. Even though he was hungry by the time he finished the dish, he was nicely satisfied which was good.

I haven’t been back to this place since, which is a bit of a disappointment but I have already recommended it to friends andI’m hoping when they try it they’ll love it as much as I do. Will definitely be back for sure!

Stagger Lee’s

What can I say, yes been super lazy but here’s a new post for you all to read!!

Came here a few months ago as I had heard this place was the sister cafe to Proud Mary’s. As I love the food at Proud Mary’s I thought why not give this cafe a shot!

My partner and I came here with one of his work colleagues for a tasty brunch session. Surprisingly we got a table pretty quickly.. only had to wait for about 10 minutes! Scored! Although in saying that, we had to sit on the communal table and we were right near the door so it was a bit cold with the door opening and closing every so often.. but it doesn’t matter.. a seat is a seat!

We had a good look through their menu… even though it was a cold morning and I don’t particularly like cold food on a cold day, I thought I would give the bircher muesli a go… the only reason I thought of trying this was because of the COCONUT YOGHURT! I’ve tried coconut yoghurt before.. me being lactose intolerant and all.. and I actually really like it. In saying that, I don’t usually eat bircher muesli when I go out. I found the whole dish to be nice but it was a bit sweet to my liking and I found the muesli part to be a bit bland? I’m not sure if its supposed to be like that or not but it needed more flavour to it.. in my opinion anyways.. and I think that much coconut yoghurt in one go is a little too much.. but I’m not complaining.. it was still a nice dish and well presented.

My partner ordered the Frank n Beans. The dish looked so wholesome and extremely tasty! The serving size was massive as well. From what I can recall, I don’t think my partner ended up finishing it all. I tried a bit and what can I say, you can’t go wrong with beans, some bread and some sort of meat! 🙂

My partners workmate ordered the Coco pop and Salted caramel french toast. It looked so pretty on the plate. I tried a tiny bit as well and it was actually really good! Although to me, it seemed more like a dessert on a plate with all the cream n what not… but who can say no to French toast when its covered with all of that?!?!

So I’ve been to this place another time since this visit and I love it. Even though I’m not a massive fan of their soy mochas, they do delicious juices and great coffees. Will definitely be back for more!

Mixed Business

Wow I’ve been super lazy at posting… Sorry about that! Been quite busy with the new addition to the family plus we’ve been selling/buying stuff for our apartment so its been hectic!

We have recently discovered a new place located in Clifton Hill! Bit of a random spot as there is absolutely no signage on the front of the cafe but you can tell its the one with all the hustle and bustle around that one shop!

We had to wait about 5-10 minutes which was fine because in the end we were seated on a bench near the back of the cafe.. and plus it was cold that morning so a short wait was good! Lucky we got in when we did as there were lines of people out the door not long later!

We ordered our usual drinks, me the soy mocha and my partner, some fruity smoothie type thing. Then came brunch!

My partner ordered the free range poached eggs with with grilled pancetta, slow roast tomato + parmesan (he also added pork belly onto that as well!) and I had the organic sourdough toast with with avocado + house marinated feta (I added smoked salmon to mine ;))

I tried a bit of my partners pork belly! It was actually really nicely cooked. Nice and soft and not over cooked! My dish was lovely although I think I like it better when they mash the avocado up… I’m a bit picky.. I know I can just do that myself but it would be nice if they did it for you 😉

All in all, I was actually surprised with this cafe and how good the service and the food was. Would definitely come back and try something else but in saying that, it is a bit out of the way so maybe sometime in the future 🙂
